History
When you play Ye Nyne Olde Holles Golf Course, you are playing a piece of history. Ye Nyne opened in 1923 as Pine Lake Golf Course, named for the beautiful Pine Lake, now Lake Charlevoix, that it overlooked. As one of the original four golf courses in Northern Michigan, it helped introduce golf to an area that now beckons golfers from around the globe.
Pine Lake Golf Course offered golfers a chance to play the old English style, using the natural hills, thick rough, and apple and pine trees to challenge golfers while retaining the inherent beauty of the land. Family-owned and operated, it welcomed the public for two decades before closing briefly during World War II. When it reopened, it was with a new name, Ye Nyne Olde Holles, and the public welcomed its return.
Ye Nyne Olde Holles returned the welcome by supporting the community in many ways, from hosting local beauty pageants and a centennial tournament, to business banquets and the high school golf team. This community spirit continues today as the golf course hosts 4-H children?s golf programs, fund-raisers for the local schools, and benefits for members of the community.
For nearly 85 years, Ye Nyne Olde Holles has stayed true to its roots, introducing new generations to the game of golf. The course is still lined with the towering pines and gnarled old apple trees. The rolling hills that offer challenging shots, still offer the rewards of a spectacular view of Lake Charlevoix.
Of course, some changes have occurred over the years. While the original 1876 farmhouse has been preserved as the clubhouse, an extended sandwich shop and deck have been added. The recent addition of sandtraps has increased the challenge of the course without disturbing the natural beauty of the layout.
Ye Nyne Olde Holles, a piece of history that continues to welcome the public to enjoy the game of golf the way it was meant to be played.
